I know lots of people say to choose the ONE NICHE you want to write about and stick to that on your blog.
As in, if you want to write about fitness, keep your blog only about fitness.
Or if you want to write about healthy meals, keep your blog only about healthy meals.
I think most of us aren’t that focused, though. I don’t know about you, but I have LOTS of passions. I am a mom, a volunteer, an athlete, and a CPA. I love spending time with family, gathering friends at cookouts, and learning new things. I am constantly learning and love to share what I learn with everyone I meet!
Since I can’t pin down what my primary passion is, I wanted to write about all of them on my blog. I wanted to stay true to myself and for my blog to be a reflection of ALL my passions, not just one of them.
I am more than someone who can give couponing advice or parenting tricks or fix your finances.
FOCUSING and ORGANIZING MY BLOG
Ultimately, I was able to narrow things down to 7 primary topics:
- Family Finances (budgeting, kids & money, meal planning, etc)
- Making Extra Money (crafts to sell, home business ideas, etc)
- Blogging Tips (how to increase traffic, income reports, monetization help, etc)
- Family Life (faith, chores, marriage, making memories, etc)
- Free Printables (budget template, coloring pages, menu plans, to do lists, etc)
- Holidays (Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Easter, Christmas, etc)
- Fun with Kids (playdate ideas, vacations, indoor activities, etc)
But beyond that, I was lost for a long time. Mostly, I didn’t know how to ORGANIZE it all or make sure my visitors knew how to find their way around.
How would I make sure new visitors understood what my blog was about in a glance?
How could I relate one topic to another so I didn’t alienate any readers?
How should I display the categories on my header? (technical stuff always trips me up!)
Finally, after much agonizing and researching, I figured out the missing keys to making this all work. I developed a rather simple theory-based blog organization system that works for me. I think can work for almost any blog out there.
I wrote about the entire process, down to figuring out WHO I serve and figure out HOW TO ORGANIZE everything logically and put it into a guide.
It’s called How to Organize a Blog with Multiple Topics. (not the most creative name, I know, but oh so practical!) lol
You can read more about the guide here or simply go here to purchase it right now from my school, Adventures in Blogging.
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE “HOW TO ORGANIZE BLOG CATEGORIES” GUIDE
If you like printables, you’ll like the blog category planning worksheet that’s included. We’ll not only go over the theory behind how you should determine your blog topics, but I’ll explain how to lay it all out on paper before you ever go into WordPress to set anything up (if you’re a new blogger) or fix existing issues (if you’re an experienced blogger).
Because I’m a huge EXAMPLES person, there are lots of visuals in this guide! This is NOT theory. This guide is borne out of 100% actual experience!
BENEFITS OF HAVING A WELL ORGANIZED BLOG
Once you understand the principles behind organizing a blog with multiple topics, you will be 100% clear on exactly how to lay out your content so it makes sense to your ideal reader. In addition to no longer confusing your readers, you will:
- Be able to increase your blog traffic because it will be totally clear which blog posts are jumping off points to other blog posts
- Know exactly what to write next because your blog categories are clearly defined (i.e. never run out of blog post topics!)
- Understand exactly who you’re writing to because you will identify this specific person during the organization process
If you are in the same spot of wanting to blog about all sorts of things but not sure what to do about that, I highly encourage you to read this guide and use it to get yourself organized. I recommend doing this process from the beginning of your blogging career, but EVEN IF you have 350 blog posts, you can use it to backtrack and fix things (that’s what I did).
I can’t wait to hear if it helps you!!
