Ya’ll. Today I want to write about something I’ve been meaning to talk about for quite a while.
Seasonal allergies and allergies in general have plagued me my entire life. Whenever I’ve lived in a home with carpet, my allergies have given me problems.
I like clean air, and carpets seem to hold onto dust + other allergens that make me sneeze constantly.
Earlier this year, we decided to go on a rampage against the allergens in our carpet, and I want to write about this so you can see how it’s possible to go from allergy central to clean air.
We used to have this nasty carpet in our bedroom that we inherited from the previous owners.
They let their dog sleep in the room (and I’m allergic to dogs), and we were pretty sure the carpet was approximately 8 years old when we moved in. Fast forward 9 years and 3 kids later, and we had a really bad situation on our hands!
Every time I bent down near the carpet to pick something up, I would sneeze. I kid you not!
The air quality in our master bedroom was bad. Like really bad. It was also embarrassingly decorated. I wish I had pictures to show you how bad it was, but I didn’t feel the need to take pictures of that run down, allergy infested room!
How to Get Clean Air in a Bedroom
There were a few things we did to reclaim the air quality in our master bedroom.
About a year ago, I enlisted the help of an interior decorator friend of mine to help me revamp our bedroom. I was tired of living in sneeze kingdom, and I wanted to make a clean, peaceful sanctuary for us to retire to at night.
Our bedroom underwent a few major changes to take it from allergy central to a restful CLEAN sanctuary where we can get more restful sleep.
1) We ripped out the carpet
The carpet was horrible underneath!! And my husband (who’s super handy!) replaced it with lovely hardwood flooring:
2) We painted the walls + added colorful accessories
It all started with the lovely floral wall art you see above our master bed. The colors are thrown all around the room, with an emphasis on blues and oranges to compliment the gray walls. Everything looked lovely when we were done!
3) Finallly, we got a small Venta airwasher
The Venta airwasher is an air humidifier and purifier. I not only wanted to get rid of the dust collecting carpet, I wanted to fight against any future dust! We placed it near the window and you can barely notice it when you walk in the room. The color even blends into our wall color! lol
So many people ask me about my airwasher. You can read all about the benefits of having a Venta Airwasher in your home here >> Venta Airwasher air purifier facts
What exactly is an Airwasher?
It’s such a cool machine. I found out about them a couple years ago and couldn’t wait to try one out. This master bedroom redo gave me the perfect reason to do so.
In a nutshell, the Venta Airwasher is a humidifier AND purifier. It cleans your air and adds moisture as needed to the air. As long as you keep it running, it removes particles like dust, pollen, mold and bacteria from your air while adding in fresh, clean water your air thirsts for.
No filters or white dust like you may remember with a traditional humidifier from your childhood. Just clean air!
Creating Clean Air & Peaceful Sleep
When all was said and done, these 3 major changes, brightened the overall mood of the room AND created clean air, making it allergy friendly.
Once we made these changes, the room became instantly easier to maintain. Because the hard wood floors don’t capture allergens, I am able to sweep & polish away any dust or dirt that accumulates.
And once week, I’ll quickly dust the other surfaces to stay on top of this task.
The only other thing I have to do is do a bi-monthly cleaning of the Venta Airwasher which is super easy.
Low Maintenance Allergy Help
The Airwasher unit is really easy to take care of. It’s super reasonable amount of work considering how hard it works on your behalf. All you have to do is empty it out every couple weeks in the bathtub or sink, rinse out the inside, add fresh Water Treatment Additive, then fill it right back up and you’re good to go!
You can technically clean it with some white vinegar and water on a cloth as needed OR put it in your dishwasher. LOL I’m not even kidding! Every part of an Airwasher is dishwasher safe except the motor and cord. You just need to NOT use detergent anduse the lowest heat setting on your dishwasher.
Other Benefits to Owning a Venta Airwasher
The Venta Airwasher is good for so many things in addition to less dusting & rejuvenation such as:
- Dry skin
- No snoring
- Better sleep
- Increased concentration
- Less illness
- Decreased pet hair + dander
- Reducing cooking odors
I hope this give you a glimpse into what you can achieve with a few strategic changes to your bedroom materials and cleaning routine.
Once we got all these things into place, it was easy enough to maintain and I don’t know how else to describe our room but “lighter” in every way! I hope you can do the same for the most important room in your house.
