VIPKID is a growing company that offers online one-on-one English lessons to children in China.
Easy peasy. You don’t need to know Chinese to get in on this. As long as you can teach English basics to children between the ages of 4-12, you can make a living online.
One of the best parts, you don’t make the curriculum. That’s right, you just teach what’s laid out for you. How easy is that?! Another perk of the job, you don’t have to communicate with the parents. VIPKID handles all parent correspondence. Every single teacher out there should breathe a sigh of relief with this fact alone. Parent/teacher communications are stressful and time consuming whether they are good or bad. This is just one more way VIPKID takes care of both their students and their teachers.
Here is some simple math:
If you work the bare minimum of 7.5 hours/week. And you get paid the minimum rate of $14/hour. You will make $105/wk. That’s $420/month. $5,460/year.
Not bad for less than 10 hours a week.
And that’s only if you don’t make any bonuses, which VIPKID offers quite a few of. They have bonuses for positive reviews, completing lessons on time, number of lessons, etc… You can easily raise that minimum $14/hr to $18 or $20 in no time.
If I was a teacher and wanted to take some time off to be a stay at home mom, I would take this job in a heartbeat to generate some extra cash flow. And it fills that pesky problem of gaps in the resume. Win-win.

A little basic info- What you’ll need, what to expect
There is a little bit of tech you’ll need to get started. Nothing out of the ordinary for most online jobs.
You’ll need 1. Device (Desktop, Laptop, MAC, Surface) 2. Camera- HD External camera or HD integrated camera (Most laptops have it) 3. Headset
Biggest necessity—-> a teaching mentality. You’ll be working with children. Kids don’t want the strict college professor type. If you can make it fun and easy, you’ll both thrive.
Class length
All classes are 30 min long. 25 minutes of time is spent teaching, with 5 min built in for comment time and to handle tech issues that may come up.
Office hours
You make your own office hours, one of the perks of online work, but remember those hours are on Beijing time. Since all of the kids will be school aged and will need be tutored on off hours, you may have to give up some time on the weekends or early mornings. China is 12 hours ahead of EST. So if you’re in Atlanta and want to have kids in China in your classes from 5-8PM, you’ll have to offer classes from 5-8AM.
According to the website’s FAQ the peak requested time periods in Beijing time: Monday-Friday 6-10pm, and Saturday-Sunday 9am–10pm. You have 46 hours to choose from to fill that minimum 7.5 hours.
This is awesome if you want to free up the middle of your day for vacation!! It’s so easy to take your laptop with you everywhere. Work from 6-9, breakfast, beach, nap, lunch, shop, eat some more, etc… Do that Monday through Friday, and you’ve worked 15 hours, making $210. That’s a great vacation.
Contract
The base contract is for 6 months. Long enough to get a feel for the job and long enough to build your reputation. At the end of your contracts you can see if you qualify for a pay raise.
Be your own boss
You’ll be a freelance teacher. Which means you are your own boss and you’ll have to do your own taxes. Seems tricky, but it’s super simple to look up the tax info online for your home site so you can set aside enough for tax time.
