College is an exciting time for everyone. Kids are beginning to be adults, parents are beginning their lives with a child free home, and everyone is adjusting to a new lifestyle.
My little sister is going back to college this fall, and I want to get her something useful for a present. College students usually have limited funds and space, so it needs to be a gift that she needs as well as something she wants.
I love sending gift boxes and baskets so I can personalize each selection. Really, I love giving gifts of any type, especially when I know it’s something that the recipient will appreciate.
Gift Box Ideas for College Students
College students are really easy to buy for. They will just be happy to receive any financial help, and purchasing everyday items and/or a few luxuries for them makes for a perfect gift.
Food and Food Supplies
These need to be items that don’t take much prep and can last, since the typical college fridge also seconds as a side table or tv stand and has to accommodate a few different people.
Ideas for the food supplies basket:
- Cutlery
- Plates and bowls
- Chocolate
- Granola bars
- Peanut butter
- Napkins
- Microwaveable noodle bowls
- Food and more food and more food!
These are all things that an average student will go through regularly. You really cannot send them too much food! 🙂
Getting a care package mid semester, is also an uplifting event, so if you can’t be there for the move in, don’t worry about it and wait a couple months to send a cheerful package.
Cleaning supplies
I like to get most of my cleaning supplies at warehouse clubs, so I went to Costco to gather supplies for my gift basket.
Why make multiple trips to different stores, when I can go to this one stop shop and get enough supplies to last for a month?
If you want to give a gift full of cleaning supplies some ideas:
- Disinfecting wipes
- Dish soap & sponges
- Laundry detergent
- Paper towels
These supplies make practical presents since everyone needs to clean something at some point.
Bathroom Supplies & Toiletries
When you’re in college, bathroom supplies can seem like luxuries because they can get pricey and may not fit into a college student budget. Give your student some of these items to allow them to save that money for something else:
- Towels
- Shampoo
- Soap
- Razors
- Toothbrushes & toothpaste
I like to get some travel size ones as well as some standard sizes. My sister is pretty active and goes on trips with her friends. Hauling a large bottle around isn’t convenient and may lead to a very large mess should it break.
Fun Stuff
Nail polish, sewing kits, gift cards and lip balm may not be necessary for surviving college, but they make things go along a little smoother. Splurge items are good for raising your college kid’s mood and giving them a chance for a little down time.
Between classes, studying and part-time gigs, these young adults need all the down time they can get!
Tailor it to Your Student
For my gift, I chose towels and Tide Advanced Power detergent as a gift. Both are important (and necessary) items, and both will get used so I know it wasn’t going to waste.
I dislike wasting money! Getting them at Costco makes this basket a great value – you can really get excellent deals there. We just joined this summer and love it so far.
Good towels are a luxury and can be comforting after a stressful day, and I trust Tide to keep my family’s clothing clean and fresh, so I wanted to send the good stuff with her to college. 🙂
Not Just for College
These gift ideas aren’t just for going away to college. They’re perfect for many occasions.
They would be perfect housewarming gifts for a young adult moving into their first apartment, newlyweds getting a fresh start, or a new family who moved in next door.
A friendly gesture goes a long way whenever someone is making a transition in their life.
