Today I am excited to share something that has revolutionized my life as a mom to a three year old. And I want to thank Orajel™ Kids for sponsoring this post which reminded me to share this epiphany I had this year when it comes to tooth brushing in our house!
As someone who has been in charge of my own oral health for the last 35 years, I know how important it is to take proactive steps in keeping my mouth healthy. Now that I’m a mom of three, I’m concerned with kids’ oral health as well.
I’ve not been 100% responsible in caring for my own teeth in the past (not flossing consistently, brushing long enough, etc) and sort of skated by on the fact that my teeth are NOT cavity prone. Unfortunately, two out of three of my kids ARE cavity-prone, and I’ve had to get better about the ins and outs of oral care for their sake. I’m feeling the pressure now because it’s my job to teach them how to take care of their teeth!
Fighting the Good Fight
I went many years trying to fight with my older two to brush their teeth. I literally would sometimes have to hold them down while I brushed their teeth because they would complain about the toothpaste (too “hot”) or the toothbrush (too “tickly”).
I finally realized, after going through this struggle a third time, that I was going about it all wrong! I realized I needed to address the issues (not liking the toothpaste) and take tooth brushing time from a struggle to something fun that we do as part of our bedtime routine. So I did two main things:
Step 1: Find a Highly Rated Toothpaste That’s Not “Hot”
I went on a search for toothpaste that I approved of AND my kids liked. After going through about five different brands, I finally settled on Orajel Kids as the brand that all three liked the best and the one I never got the “it’s too hot on my mouth” complaint about.
I found that has a wide range of products that make teaching little ones about oral health a breeze. Their product line includes nighttime teething gel for babies, fluoride-free training toothpaste for toddlers, and fluoride toothpaste for older kids.
We used the nighttime teething gel when our babies were teething and they were in a lot of pain from teeth breaking through the skin. The fluoride- free training toothpaste is perfect for little ones who can’t spit properly…my 3-year-old still uses this because he refuses to spit properly even though he knows how. He’s such a stinker! My 5-year-old absolutely loves the Bubble Guppies fluoride toothpaste…and my oldest says she’s too old for a “baby” show like Bubble Guppies, but she totally uses it when I’m not looking. 🙂
No matter what stages your little ones are in when it comes to their oral development, Orajel Kids has you covered with their line of oral health products.
Step 2: Sing a Song
I first heard about singing a song to help kids stay focused in relation to teaching kids to wash their hands for an appropriate amount of time in a kids show.
The idea was that kids should simply sing the ABC song all the way through as they got soap on their hands, rubbed their hands together, and rinsed off the soap. One song = one full hand washing experience.
Then I heard about this tooth brushing song, and while I don’t remember the exact words, I remember the basic gist of it, and thought it could apply to tooth brushing. So I came up with a version that makes sense to me & that’s what we sing when we brush our teeth!
Just for you guys, I turned this into a printable PDF file so you can print it out at home and even frame for your bathroom if you’d like! It’s a great reminder of how the song goes until everyone commits it to memory!

Keep in mind that because the song is rather short, we sing it through about 5 times slowly to get in 2 minutes of teeth brushing. It’s nice because when we get done brushing, the kids always remember to floss because the song tells them to! 🙂
Changing our toothpaste and singing this song are the two steps that have revolutioned tooth brushing time in our home! We rarely have struggle with this routine now, whereas every night used to be a battle!
