With two children in our house, we fight the good fight every winter to keep our immune systems healthy.
It’s so easy for those little stinkers to sneak in germs from playdates, bounce houses, and school!
I like to be on top of things to keep us as healthy as possible so we can fight the bugs that come our way.
Keeping our family functioning starts with keeping myself in top shape so I can take care of anyone else who ends up getting sick! Today I’m partnering with Zicam® to tell you all about how I’m adding Zicam® Total Immune products to my arsenal to keep our family going this winter.
Step 1: Keeping Mom Healthy
I’m all about getting my vitamins through food and taking immune boosting supplements. I can’t believe I had never tried any of the Zicam® immune boosting products until now!
If you have never tried immune boosting supplements before, let me give you some background on two of their new products:
- Zicam® Total Immune + Performance Support Orange Burst Melts – These are formulated with B vitamins which convert your food into fuel. They dissolve in your mouth and give you extra energy support to keep up with your kids and everyday life.
- Zicam® Total Immune + Digestive Health Berry Crystals – These are dissolving packets (kind of like pixie sticks) that you can take with you on the go. They contain pro-biotics with live active cultures that are important for digestive health.
I try to stay within the realm of my vocabulary when reading an ingredient list to decide whether or not I should eat something. If I can’t say it or have never heard of it, I don’t eat/ drink it. I make the exception for soda, I already know it’s bad for me so I just close my eyes and enjoy that delicious poison. Before I tried these supplements, I read some reviews and was pretty interested. The Zicam®supplements seemed innocent enough to me, so I went for it.
Zicam® Total Immune + Performance Support Orange Burst Melts
When I got these out, my husband (who is a fitness fanatic) took the box from my hands and announced he was going to sample this one. He isn’t one to try new things, but he is a big proponent of making health a top priority every day and showing up for yourself instead of waiting for the right time to come along. If chewing a couple of fruit tabs will help him with that then he is all about it. The box comes with 20 tablets and reads Amino acid and essential electrolytes, high in antioxidants and B vitamins and a natural source of caffeine. This mixture is meant to make food more efficiently turned into fuel. When I hear that all I can think is…science got me again. I don’t know the how or the why, but I’m in. 🙂
The melts are more like a treat than a supplement – we both thought they were pretty good tasting for melting tablets.
Zicam® Total Immune + Digestive Health Berry Crystals
These were way better than I expected them to be. I don’t know why I imagined they would fizz or foam but they of course didn’t and dissolved pretty easily in a small amount of water. These interested me because of the pro-biotics. I wanted to try them and see if they really work. Having a gluten sensitivity, I can easily get stomach issues since I’m not strict enough to be 100% free of the stuff. So far so good. No problems, staying regular, pretty happy about it. 🙂
The crystals have a light sweetness like chewing gum has. I’m not one to drink really sweet drinks, and it was perfect for me.
Zicam® Total Immune Products – Affordable & Convenient
Overall the Zicam® Total Immune products were easy to use, easy to transport and fairly affordable at approximately $8.50 for a box. My personal investigations (walking around the drug store and Walmart during errands) found they are easy to access as well so I don’t have to make a special trip to get it. In the future I would use them during the winter to boost my immune system, it certainly couldn’t hurt.
Step 2: Staying Away from Germs & Washing Hands at Peak Times
This one is a new strategy for me as of late 2015, and it’s totally working!
Several times every winter, my little guy comes home from the gym/school/wherever with some sort of sickness and then we all catch it from him. Knowing that our toddler is the source of most of the germs that enter our house, I came up with a game plan.
It’s fairly simple, actually. It involves 1) washing his hands immediately after he plays with other kids and 2) not taking him to the gym with me late in the day when I know sick kids have been in and out of the KidZone all day and the workers haven’t had time to disinfect.
In reality, this simply means I had to make two small changes to our routine. First, we head straight the the bathroom after preschool pickup to wash our hands. This way we’re washing those yucky germs down the drain before we ever leave the building. For the gym, this just means that I only take him with me when we can go early in the day.
I have no evidence to back up the effectiveness of any of this, but I do know that we have all been sick about half as much as we have been in any other year, so I’m saying this strategy totally works!
Step 3: Exercise for Everyone
Exercise has been shown to boost immunity, and I don’t know about you, but in the wintertime I have a tendency to be a little lazy and curl up under a blanket instead of working out. This winter I made a commitment for everyone in the family to get an hour of group exercise several times a week and I also make the kids play outside more instead of watching tv. They’ve loved it, and we’re healthier for it. Not to mention, this is great for boosting everyone’s mood and getting the kids to sleep better. 🙂
So there you have it – my 3-point action plan this winter to keep our family going when the germs are raging all around us. How do you approach immune health?
