My little guy is a dinosaur. I mean he thinks he’s a dinosaur.
He takes his dinosaurs everywhere he goes. To the park, to his brother’s hockey practice, to bed with him, and to the dinner table (they eat without using their hands, and so does he).
They even take a bath with him at night.
Bath time is supposed to be fun for kids, and he makes it fun by bringing his best friends. But sometimes bath time leads to rashes and itching it makes the experience uncomfortable for everyone involved. His skin certainly reacts to changes in humidity and gets flaky soon after bath time, especially during the winter. I don’t like my baby’s skin to feel like a dinosaur’s. :/
Even as a newborn he would get patchy spots and rub on them with his little hands making the problem worse. Just try stopping a 2 month old from scratching himself – it doesn’t go over too well. It’s always nice to be needed and he needs me to manage this.
Today I’m happy to partner with Dove to explain the four things I do at bath time to ensure my little guy has smooth, soft skin.
How to Handle Bath Time When Your Child Has Sensitive Skin
Babies have delicate skin and the strong chemicals found in many soaps and other cleansing products can strip the essential nutrients from it making for an uncomfortable and grumpy child. Something everyone wants to avoid.
Over the years I’ve learned a few ways to manage this problem and keep him (and us) happy since he love, love, loves playing in the water.
- Use a sensitive cleanser: Mild scents are tolerated fine by my kids but anything strongly perfumed is a no-go, we need something that does the job well the first time. At the moment we use the Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar during baths and showers and we are very happy with it. It is currently the #1 recommended mild cleanser by dermatologists and pediatricians that is 1/4 moisturizing cream and more gentle than a soap. Both my 10 and 3 year old use it so we don’t need to buy a different product for the baby’s skin to keep it smooth and soft like it always should be while making sure the older one actually gets clean. Boys are always covered in something. Anything that lets me spend less and have less in the bag to cart inside is a winner for sure. We have little ones in the immediate family with eczema and this product doesn’t aggravate her skin so I feel safe using it on my face as well to wash the day away. It’s good for the whole family.
- Keep the temperature down: This one is hard for me to follow personally since I love hot baths & showers, but for the kids, I make the water so it is just warm enough. I can always add more as it cools to keep them happy, but I don’t start with it hot. I feel like they have many years ahead to cook themselves in a hot shower without help from me.
- Towel dry: This one everyone has heard of, probably because it is simple and it works. No hair dryers or other heaters, just a simple pat down and then grease them up while their skin is still damp.
- Use oil or petroleum jelly immediately after each bath or shower: I’m not picky to a certain brand with the jelly since it all seems to be the exact same thing, store brand has been as good to us as name brand. There is only one rule with the oils, keep it simple, only oils I can name all the ingredients of. Canola oil from the kitchen does the trick as well and is affordable. I mainly use the oil on the body and hair and the petroleum jelly on the face but if there is a rough patch somewhere I’ll stick jelly there too.
These are the simple steps I use. Not much to it but they work for us and keep the kids in itch free, smooth, soft, patch-free skin. Of course, make sure they drink water is on the list, but that is a whole day list not just the bath time one.
Affordable Sensitive Skin Care
Dove is an affordable option for families with sensitive skin. A 2-bar pack is only $3.79 suggested retail. I find that I can get many, many bath times out of one large bar, so this is money well spent, in my opinion.
I love that the Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar is dye-free and gentle enough to use for infants and children with eczema. It has been proven safe to use with infants as young as 2 months old. That was around the age I started to use cleanser on my babies, so really it’s a cleanser you can rely on for their entire childhood. 🙂
You can find Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bars in drugstores, supermarkets, and big box chain stores. If you have an Amazon account, you can even buy them online!

All great tips! I’ve used Dove Body Wash for years and now my 13-year-old daughter uses it too. While she was little, we used the Dove soap bars for her and it works great for smooth skin. We also moisturize using cocoa butter or shea butter. After using both, we feel good and smell yummy!

Oh yeah, cocoa butter and shea butter are both great ideas, too!
