You guys. I am seriously sooooooo excited!
Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays, and I thought it would be a great idea to put together some cute treats for the blog.
I am all about making themed desserts these days. Meet my new favorite Valentine’s Day treat:
Conversation Heart Rice Krispie Treats
These are so cute and easy to whip together for a classroom treat, or just a fun lunch box addition. These Conversation Heart Rice Krispie Treats are a little piece of nostalgia in a little, crunchy (heart-shaped) package!
I love the sweet pastel coloring, but you can leave that out for some plain heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats if you’d prefer. I used food coloring to achieve the subtle coloring, but you could alternatively use a few candy melts – just add them in while you’re melting the butter and marshmallows in the microwave.
I haven’t tried using pastel colored marshmallows for this recipe yet, but I can’t wait to give them a try and report back!
Tips for Making Heart Shaped Rice Krispie Treats
I recommend using a heart-shaped pan or heart-shaped, silicone muffin liners for this recipe, but if you’re in a pinch you can make a large baking sheet size Rice Krispie treat and cut out the heart shapes with a large cookie cutter – just make sure to make the giant Rice Krispie square only about 2″ thick so that you can easily cut through it. (And refrigerate before you attempt to cut out the heart shapes or the mixture will just stick to your cookie cutter.)
If you wanted to take this recipe up a notch, you could let the kids decorate their hearts into love bugs with candy eyes or licorice whip, or practice their penmanship with some candy markers or icing pens.
You could also make on GIANT heart-shaped Rice Krispie by using a heart-shaped cake pan or forming the Rice Krispies with a oiled spatula on a lined baking sheet.
Valentine’s Day Conversation Heart Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 Tablespoons butter
- 4 cups JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows
- 6 cups Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal
- 1 teaspoon vanilla or candy extract, optional
Instructions
- Melt the butter and marshmallows in a microwave safe bowl, heating in 30 second increments and stirring in between. My microwave only needs one 30 second burst.
- Add the food coloring gradually and stop when you reach the desired color.
- Mix in your Rice Krispies and stir to coat them completely in the butter-marshmallow mixture.
- Press your Rice Krispies mixture into a prepared heart-shaped pan, or heart-shaped muffin liners. If using a metal pan, I like to give it a generous spray with PAM.
- Place in the fridge and allow to set up to one hour before serving.
