In the post “How to Choose a Blog Name You Won’t Regret” I went over many of the basics related to choosing a great blog name. If you’re here, you’re likely past the point of figuring out what kind of blog to start and you’re ready to name the darn thing!! 🙂
When you start your blog, settling on a so-so name was my biggest worry. I didn’t want a bad name…I didn’t even want a “good” name….I wanted the BEST NAME I COULD THINK OF!
I spent many days agonizing over this one thing, and I bet you are probably here because you’re in the same boat. If that’s you, I hope this post and the one I linked to above help a lot.
In this post, I wanted to go over specifically how to make sure your blog name is UNIQUE.
Whether you’re starting a food or fitness blog, a travel or lifestyle blog….making sure it’s unique is a big part of the equation.
There can only be so many blogs called any mixture of the three words “Fit Fun Foodie” or “Simple Living Girl.” You need that extra something to make sure your blog stands out!
So how do you settle on the perfect (cute, yet professional. creative, not cheesy) domain name?
Let’s discuss!
NAMING YOUR BLOG: GETTING IT RIGHT!
There are so many things to consider when selecting your blog name, and you want to get this right because you will be stuck with it for a very long time!
Keep in mind that you can do this without any fancy tools – all that’s required to choose a great blog name is a little bit of creativity and brainstorming.
Hopefully by the end of this blog post, you’ll have a better idea of what to name your blog. And if you don’t, do not worry – I have more resources linked below that can further help.
Creativity Meets Practical: Naming Your Blog Properly
Sometimes we find the perfect blog name only to realize we can’t actually use it. I know – because that was me!
I wanted an attention-grabbing blog title that was easy to remember and every idea I thought of was taken. I think it’s because I wasn’t truly being original enough.
So I wrote down some tips to help you choose a name you will be proud of and NOT go through the trial and error heartache that I did as I was picking mine out.
After you finish reading through these tips, you’ll be fully prepared to choose a brilliant name for your blog.
Steps to Choosing Cute Blog Name (Catchy & Attention Grabbing Ideas)
You don’t have to use a blog name generator to come up with a great line…just use your imagination keeping these tips in mind!
As you go along, keep in mind that you can check for domain name availability as you go along.
Coming up with a good domain name is something filled with disappointment because oftentimes you will think of the most wonderful name, only to find out it’s already taken!
My best tip? Definitely don’t want to get married to the idea of a certain name only to find out that title is unavailable!
1. Include an unexpected word
This is by far the best way to ensure your blog name is unique AND memorable.
I personally think a blog name is highly memorable when the name incorporates something “unexpected” in the name or pairs two words that don’t normally go together like “Blue Sixteen” or “Blossoms at Midnight.” I know those are really random examples, but you get the idea!
When you combine unexpected words together, something amazing emerges.
Note: There are only two things I would NOT do while you’re trying to be super unique with this process:
- I would not get so clever with your name that no one can remember it or spell it (intentional misspellings are probably not a good idea here unless you are really trying to come up with a unique name like “Google.” My guess is that’s not your goal here, though.
- Don’t put a NUMBER in your blog name. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen anyone do that. Can you technically do this? I think so….but honestly I wouldn’t recommend it.
Just off the top of my head, here are some cool example blog name combos that sound really amazing:
- Dreaming in Blue
- Cotton Candy Dreams
- Bluebird Homestead
- The Crafty Accountant
- Pink Daffodils
- The Purple Canary
** I have NOT checked their availability, so if you want to use one, don’t forget to do that using the link above.

2. Make it meaningful to you.
Everyone has something in their past that is unique to them. Although you don’t necessarily need to come up with a blog name about your life, I think it’s cool when the blog name can incorporate an aspect of your life.
In my case, it is the word Sweetgum. I grew up on Sweetgum Road and we had sweet gum trees in our yard, so that term reminds me of my childhood. If I ever start a second lifestyle blog, I’m thinking of using “sweetgum” in the name. This will make it unique sounding AND meaningful to me.
Maybe you have red hair? Your blog can incorporate the name “red” or “ginger.” In fact, one of my blogging friends – Frugal Ginger – did that and it’s a really catchy name!
The meaningfulness can come from something in your past, a personality trait, something unique about the way you look, or even relate to where you live. Anything goes!
If you can’t decide between two options, then I’d say go with the one that means the most to you…the one you’d be proud to tell friends about one day.
Some people ask me if they can use their own name for their blog. While you can, that is not typically the way someone names a lifestyle blog. A lot of people who offer services like coaching DO use their name, though!
Keep in mind that if you use your personal name, this will limit your opportunities to sell your blog later because it will be tied to your personality & personal stories.
I will probably sell WhatMommyDoes one day and at that time, someone can simply remove all mentions of me from the blog and then add their own. Just something to consider!

3. Double check that it’s not already being used.
I cannot stress this enough. I’ve mentioned it several times on my blog because it’s that important! When you find an inspiring & creative blog name you love, don’t just check the exact version on social media and for URL availability, but also check any variations. The last thing you want is to name your blog SunshineMom only to find out that there is already a blogger using the name SunshineMoms or Sunshine & Moms. Some terms to add to your name when you’re double checking this: a dash, &, use different versions of the same word, make it plural.

A NOTE ON PERFECTION IN BLOGGING
I sometimes wish I could go back in time and choose a catchier name for my blog.
WhatMommyDoes felt like the best idea I could come up with at the time, but I have thought of SO MANY more interesting ones over the years.
Even if it’s not catchy, it IS EASY TO REMEMBER, which is a great quality in a blog name.
So even if you can’t determine if your chosen blog name is unique enough, just remember that easy to remember is great as well. 😊
Don’t let perfection get in the way of ACTION. The internet rewards action and it’s possible to sit on a new blog idea for YEARS before you ever take action on it. And by the time your start, the momentum might get away from you. Trust me, I know this from experience!
Do yourself a favor and make a decision SOON. Do the best you can and move on…it’s not the end of the world if you don’t love your blog name forever and ever the best for always….sometimes good enough is good enough!

HOW LONG CAN YOUR BLOG NAME BE?
Your blog name can be as long as you want, but just make sure it’s not so long that it’s difficult to remember or spell. Single words are likely not available to use due to popularity. A perfect blog name will be around 2 to 4 words long.
ENCOURAGEMENT FOR STARTING YOUR BLOG
Please don’t fret if you can’t choose JUST THE RIGHT blog name. Like I said, I wish I had chosen a different name for WhatMommyDoes, but in the end it all turned out great.
Do the best that you can and don’t second guess yourself. Be confident in your choice and run with it!
Good bloggers all possess one standard quality – the ability to throw caution to the wind and adopt the mantra “what’s the worst that could happen?”
As soon as I adopted this as my go-to phrase, the world opened up to me. W
hat is the worst that could happen if your blog name isn’t just so? Are people gonna make fun of you? Nope. Will something bad happen? Nope.
Probably the worst that could happen is you think, “oh man, I wish I had added this to my name”
See? Not the worst outcome in the world. But what I do know is that if you never start for fear of not being perfect, NOTHING will happen.
And that concludes my kick-in-the-pants speech for the day! hehe

Naked as in honest and truthful
Or I could just do
The honest millennial
Lena Gott says
I like the naked millenial, but I could see that causing an issue with sponsors! For that reason, I’d say go with TheHonestMillenial. 🙂

Hi Alex – I also like this one! The honest millenial is good, too.
