This is #2 in a series of 14 posts that shares a simple trick for saving money. I don't do well with the DEPRIVATION part of budgeting, but I know that sticking to a budget (at least most of the time) is important for our family's financial health. So I like it when I can find ways to turn saving money into a game. Here's a simple game I like to play about once a week that saves me approximately $40 per month on groceries. ==>> CLICK HERE TO READ MORE Keep Reading

When I left my full-time job as a corporate tax accountant to became a stay-at-home-mom seven years ago, I was scared out of my mind. I was so worried we wouldn't be able to survive on one income after living (and spending most of) two equivalent incomes for years. I knew our lives were about to change in a crazy way when our income was all of a sudden cut in half. I know now that going from two incomes to one is TOUGH, but also DOABLE with the right attitude and preparedness. I’ve shared my story  before, but I thought it would be neat to see how others approach the task of Keep Reading

I have something earth shattering to share with you today. Ready for it? MY KIDS DON'T LIKE TO EAT VEGETABLES What?! Your kids don't either?! I'm glad we found each other. :) Joking aside, I feel like I'm fighting a constant nutrition battle around here. With all the non-nutritious treats and "food" my kids have access to at school and are exposed to by the media, I feel like I spend an unreasonable amount of time making sure they have good eating habits. Ever since my oldest was born 7 years ago (my other kids are 4 and 2), I feel like I've developed quite an arsenal of tricks to Keep Reading

By night, you can usually find me blogging. It’s the only time where I can fully focus on blogging tasks. But by day, you can find me doing many other things that matter to me. Mostly it is taking care of my 3 little ones, but about 10-15 hours per week you can also find me serving as president of a local non-profit that sends food home with underprivileged children. I honestly don’t have a lot of free time for anything other than taking care of my children and running our household, but blogging is an outlet for me and I LOVE giving back. Helping others figure out how to do the same, Keep Reading

As my children move out of the toddler stage, I'm conscious of the need to make recurring memories as a family that they can look back on with fondness later in life. So I've been thinking of family Christmas tradition ideas that I might like to incorporate this year. I also have a penchant for keeping costs low when it comes to family fun, unless we're going on a destination vacation like Disneyworld or the beach. So I came up with a list of 7 inexpensive family Christmas traditions that are low on cost yet high on the potential to stick and becoming a recurring tradition in my Keep Reading

An image of Cinderella's Castle at Disney World in Florida, surrounded by lush greenery and a body of water. The text reads "2 Must Have Resources for Planning the Perfect Disney Vacation," including a Free Disney Map, above the castle.

Before our family went to Disney World last year, we found out as many vacation planning tips as possible from friends and family. We received so much advice (some of it conflicting) that we couldn't possibly take it all. However, two tips we followed and were glad we did were requesting the free resources available to us.   By far my favorite thing we got before our trip was a set of customized maps showing which attractions we wanted to see in each park. Since our kids were 1, 3, and 6, we chose all the little kid rides we could. We took those maps with us into the Keep Reading

A close-up of a red and white bullseye target with text above it reading, "Target REDcards.... Good?? Bad?? Necessary Evil?" highlights the Target REDcard benefits on a blue background.

Discover the Target RedCard benefits - and whether or not it's worth having! A few years ago, I signed up for the Target REDcard. Each time I check out in the store, I use it. It gets me 5% off everything I purchase. Why wouldn't I? When the cashier explained that having a REDcard would automatically earn me 5% off of EVERY purchase I make at Target, I was hooked! Ever since Target significantly lowered their grocery prices a few years ago, I started doing a lot more of our everyday shopping there. I'd say I easily spend $2,000 of our yearly food budget at this store. 5% on $2,000 is Keep Reading

Most moms I know handle household finances (or at least do the grocery shopping!), so I want to make sure we're all equipped with the tools necessary to do this job well. When I first started couponing, I had NO CLUE where I was supposed to find printable grocery store coupons. All I knew was that some coupons came in the Sunday paper. For all the new couponers out there, I don't want to take it for granted that you all know where to get free coupons you can print out. It took me MONTHS of couponing to realize I could also print out coupons from home. So here's my post Keep Reading

A circular teal graphic with a decorative border showcases the text "How to Create a Budget" in pink. Below, in green text, it reads "by WhatMommyDoes," offering an inviting guide on how to create a budget.

On WhatMommyDoes, I’ve talked at length about where to find Excel budgeting spreadsheets and ways to cut down on expenses. But what I haven’t ever done is back up and explain how you can create a budget in the first place. I figure it’s about time I do that. Once you know the overall purpose of a budget plan, you’ll be better equipped to actually create a budget in Excel or use a software like Quicken to track your spending. Every family’s priorities, wants, and needs differ, so one single budgeting plan will not work for everyone. However, everyone can follow the same overall Keep Reading
